An Architect view of Chester.
Chester is the capital of Cheshire and dates to Romans times when it was a fort and known as Deva. Today it is one of the best preserved walled cities in the Country. This contributes to making the city a popular tourist destination. In addition, it is also a popular place to live due to this unique setting.
The famous medieval Rows are unique. They feature two storeys of shops, businesses and homes. The lower level often lower than the road level and accessed via steps, some into almost crypt-like vaults. The first-floor units are laid out along the “rows” and accessed via a series or repeating steep steps up to a continuous walkway separated from the railings by an (often sloping) raised “shelf”.
The black and white buildings of the city, while many of them are Victorian, provide an instant architectural aesthetic to the city centre.
Outside of the city centre, there are many different house styles and types. Many housing areas are within walking distance to the centre and the River Dee. There are other many popular residential areas for architects in Chester to work including Upton, Hoole, Handbridge, Lache and Vicars Cross. Areas such as Saughall, Mollington, Christleton, Tarvin, Mickle Trafford and Guilden Sutton are just outside the city centre.
The famous Black and White timber-framed architecture, as well as plethora of archaeological remains, provides a unique challenge and opportunity for Chester Architects.
What’s our Connection to Chester?
Born in Chester, (but growing up in Flintshire), Ian Hunter, spent a large part of his formative years in the area. This included going swimming in Northgate Arena, walking around the roman walls and along the River Dee. Shopping along Eastgate, Bridge Street and the famous departments store Brown’s of Chester was common. In later years (and this is showing his age) Ian enjoyed the nightlife of Rosie’s and Brannigans and the Sealand Road cinema and bowling alley.
In more recent years, Ian still makes regular trips to Chester with his family. He has passed his love of the area to his children who love exploring the walls as well as it’s famous Medieval Rows. Like many children visiting, they love running up and down the numerous stairs to the first-floor shops. Chester Zoo (the UK’s largest zoo set in over 125 acres) in Upton is also a hugely popular destination.
