Contemporary house extension and remodel by Architects working in Mottram St Andrew

MINDFUL MODERNITY IN MOTTRAM ST ANDREW

Ambition

A beautiful Mottram St Andrew location but a less-than-perfect house drew Cheshire couple Richard and Helen to this rural idyll.

Out of the rat-race and offering an opportunity to create something truly unique, Richard and Helen recognised the potential of this stone cottage. Not quite retiring, this house was a country bolt hole; a place where family and friends could relax, reunite and reconnect.

While in an expansive and mature setting, the house was small, dark and pokey. Low ceilings and interrupted flows made it an awkward space to navigate. Despite its established wrap-around garden, the building’s architecture did little to welcome this in. And while rich in character, the house needed considerable re-thinking to accommodate the couple’s vision for a modern, elegant living space.

Action
Understanding our client’s desire for a modern, clean living space, bi-fold doors and a connection to the garden, we focused on elevation and inclusion.

Raising the ceiling of the master bedroom into the eaves gave an immediate sense of space while retaining external character. Lowering the floor in the extension also added height to this section of the house.

A natural stone extension fused a wide expanse of glass with the buildings original stonework. These features at once invited the garden in, while being mindful of the buildings charm and rustic appeal. It was vital to blend the old with the new, the inside with the outside, and ensure the additions did not jar with the existing structure.

New windows improved insulation in the new part of the house while underfloor heating helped to regulate temperatures throughout. Externally, the driveway was reconfigured to offer a logical flow up to the front of the building, opening it up and inviting people in.

Transformation
Acknowledging and recognising the client’s need for a relaxing, inviting space, in Mottram St Andrew, that preserved character while introducing modernity lead to a refurbishment that is both mindful and modern. An architectural triumph in fusing old with new.
