Scholar Green House Extension & Remodelling

A SURGICAL TREATMENT IN SCHOLAR GREEN

Formerly the main Doctor’s surgery for the village of Scholar Green in Cheshire, the house still retained the original configuration of a two storey dwelling house with single story surgery spaces and lacked a cohesive identity or flow.

The site was arranged so the original surgery entrance was recognised as the front door of the house, however the internal layout meant that there was poor access into the rest of the house from this waiting area and accessing the staircase was only possible through a small kitchen area.

Originally our clients obtained designs from another architectural designer and whilst these were functionally OK they didn’t meet the overall client brief or inspire them.

Our client wanted to create a larger house that worked as a whole and also looked like it was meant to be that way.

Creating a new entrance and main circulation space was identified straight away as a key driver. On the first floor the existing bedrooms, in the roofspace, had very low ceilings and the new extension sought to remedy this for the new master bedroom suite.

Better access to the garden was also a key requirement for the client, however the house had several neighbouring properties which overlooked the garden and therefore strategically placed extensions were considered to maximise the light and views but minimise overlooking.

As part of the works, the existing house was better insulated and updated externally to help the scheme work as a whole.

Cheshire East planning department supported our strategy and contemporary approach and planning approval was granted within a month of submission.
