We are a small, boutique firm that specializes in the design, renovation, extension, and remodelling of existing homes, as well as creating high quality new bespoke and multi-unit homes for homeowners, land owners and developers.

Balancing imagination and pragmatism

A beautiful home should also be functional. While we take care to maximise light and space, we also pay attention to the need for ease of access, storage and flexibility. We’ll accommodate pushchairs, wheelie bins and wheelchairs to make the home works for for life.

It was a sunny September day at Sheffield University when Ian and Gillian first met. Working on a model of Farnsworth House, sparks flew.

25 years later, the duo are the proud parents of three boys and founders of Hunter Architects & Planners in Altrincham, Cheshire.

After working for international and award-winning Architects, Ian and Gillian realised there was a better way of doing things. In 2006, they founded a boutique architecture and planning firm that specializes in designing high-quality homes for private clients and developers.

Since that time, Hunter Architects & Planners has earned a reputation as an established specialist, renowned for its friendly, efficient and exacting service and elegant, contemporary designs.

Coupled with years of experience and knowledge, Hunter Architects & Planners offers clients an inspiring yet reassuring service that’s approachable and supportive. Having built their own sustainable house on a challenging site with a modest budget, Ian and Gillian have first-hand experience visualising and realising a build. They also recognise the rewards. You’ll find a human approach at the heart of everything they do.

With an in-house RTPI Planning Consultant we have a successful record of obtaining planning permission (including via planning appeal) across the UK including Green Belt, Conservation Areas, Backland Plots, Paragraph 80 Homes, Listed Buildings, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, World Heritage site as well as using Permitted Development rights to maximise the potential of sites.

Work with a husband and wife team Most architectural firms have a poor female-to-male Architect ratio. Gill’s expertise are prized in this industry and we’re proud to offer clients a balanced team with complementary skills and approaches.

Who offer expert planning assistance As an in-house service, this specialist expertise remains affordable and becomes an integral feature of all projects. We start all of our projects by carefully researching the local planning regulations and the specific restrictions of the site and context. This gives us the best chance of success when it comes to planning permission.

And deal exclusively with residential projects We intimately understand the planning, technical and regulatory aspects to make your project a success. With experience designing and constructing our own bespoke, sustainable family home and working for property developers, we understand and appreciate the financial, legal and personal complexities, limitations and requirements of the process and projects.

Where we work

Based in South Manchester with roots in Flintshire and Lancashire, many of our projects are within the North West of England and North Wales but we works across the whole of the UK.

Having delivered extensive work across a range of local planning authorities we’ve accumulated expert knowledge of the various local planning policies and restrictions, benefiting clients in terms of approvals and timings.

Due to our unique approach and experience though, we are regularly approached, and continue to work across the UK, with experience from Scotland to the south coast of England and from the East to West Coasts.

While our projects are located to a specific geography, our working methods do not limit where our clients are based. We successfully work with clients based, or travelling, all over the world, as far as America and Asia as equally as those based just around the corner.
